A historic locality, the Mountain Mine was first mined for copper during the bronze age, but large-scale mining operations began in the 1850s. The mine has an engine house, a mining slope, and a waste area. The site is located in the county of Allihies and is situated on the southwestern coast of the Irish Isle. Following a worldwide decline in the price of copper, Moutain Mine closed in the 1870s and many miners emigrated to other mining districts in America, such as the Butte District of Montana.
The mine is notable for its crystalline crusts of Langite and Brochantite formed after the area was mined.
